About Jerry T. Miller
Jerry T. Miller was born in Louisville, Kentucky and grew up in the small community
of Clark Station, located on the Jefferson/Shelby County line. He was a member of
the Fisherville Church of Christ, played softball at Eastwood Park, and attended
public schools.
In May, 1973, Miller earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting from the
University of Kentucky, passed the entire CPA exam, married his college sweetheart
Laura and moved to South Carolina, where he joined a CPA firm. He returned to Kentucky
in 1977 to join Humana.
Jerry was promoted in 1989 to Vice-President, a role he held at Humana until 1993
when the company was split. He returned to Humana in 1995 and served there until
2004, the last four years as a Vice-President, where he led a team of over 800 associates.
Feeling called to public service, Miller left Humana to work in the administration
of Governor Ernie Fletcher. He served for two years under Commerce Secretary Jim
Host, with whom he worked closely on the Kentucky State Fair Board, Kentucky Center
for the Arts, Louisville Arena Task Force, Kentucky State Parks and other issues
affecting Jefferson County.
Miller was then appointed Commissioner of Kentucky’s Department of Parks in the
spring of 2006, where he managed Kentucky’s 52 state parks and historic sites. While
Parks’ Commissioner, he founded the Kentucky State Parks Foundation (KSPF) and served
on its board of directors until August 2009. This 501(c)(3) Foundation makes grants
to individual state parks, including Louisville’s E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park,
which has already received two KSPF grants.
Since leaving state government, Jerry has volunteered for a variety of not-for-profit
organizations. He serves on the Kentucky Heritage Council and on the board of directors
of Eastern Area Community Ministries. He is also on the board of Middletown-based
Christian Care Communities, chairing their Mission Advancement Committee and serving
on their Executive and Strategic Planning Committees. He is a member of The Kentucky
Society of CPAs, Filson Historical Society, Kentucky Historical Society, Louisville
Civil War Roundtable, Kentucky Genealogical Society, and Toastmasters. Miller serves
as Vice-President of the Ashmoor Woods Homeowners Association and is a past president
of the Middletown Lions Club.
Jerry and his wife are members of Middletown Christian Church, where he serves on
the External Missions committee and went on a 2008 mission-trip to Honduras. He
has prepared tax returns for low-income people, volunteered at the Ryder Cup, helped
remodel the Eastern Area Community Ministries’ offices and food bank, and done flood
cleanup in west Louisville. An avid history buff, he leads an effort to memorialize
the site of a nearby civil war skirmish at which 22 African American soldiers were
killed and buried in a mass grave.
In September 2009, Miller was asked to serve as the Chairman of the Jefferson County
Republican Party Executive Committee. He agreed to lead the party while a search
committee could be appointed and identify the person best able to serve out the
remaining four year term of Brad Cummings, who resigned to focus on his business.
Having filled that commitment, he filed to run for the Louisville Metro Council’s
District 19 seat being vacated by Councilman Hal Heiner.
Miller enjoys bicycling, hiking, paddle sports, and an occasional game of golf.
He lives in Eastwood with Laura, his wife of 37 years. Their daughter, Jessica,
and son-in-law Matthew Kelley live in Clarksville, Tennessee, where Matt is a Methodist
pastor. Jessica is an editor with Abingdon Press in Nashville. During the memorable
January 2009 ice storm, the Millers’ first grandchild, Katharine Barry Kelley, was
born.
